ICYMI - WTF happened last week?

• The stock market had a strong week — major indexes like the S&P 500, NASDAQ Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average all closed at new highs. This rally was helped by good earnings from tech companies and growing optimism that trade talks are going well.

• Inflation (how fast prices are rising) came in at 3% in September, which is a bit lower than expected — so it looks like inflation is going up, but still under control.

• Because inflation looks manageable, the market now thinks there is a nearly 99% chance that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this week.

• Stock markets in the UAE closed higher on Friday with DFM outperforming its regional peers as tame U.S. inflation data and expectations of future Federal Reserve rate cuts ignited market optimism.

• Crude oil bounced back hard, rising 7% this week to roughly $61.50 a barrel. That’s mainly because U.S. sanctions on Russian producers reduced supply.

• Good news on the trade front: there are reports that the United States and China are close to finalising a new trade deal, which eased worries that had been pulling down global sentiment

  A survey by Appinio found that UK women are being put off investing because of negative framing: one in five said being told they “lack confidence” made them avoid investing altogether; nearly a quarter said it left them feeling patronised.
