Major indexes set fresh records on Monday but slid the rest of the week, ending slightly lower overall. For the S&P 500, it was only the second down week in the past two months.

Inflation Creep
The Fed's preferred gauge, PCE, rose 2.7% in August, the highest in six months. Core inflation held at 2.9%, matching forecasts.
